A 76-year-old man has been arrested after the body of a woman in her 50s was found in a house.
Police attended the property near Swindon, Wilts. around 1.45pm on Wednesday and found a woman, in her 50s, deceased at the scene.
The semi-detached house in Lancaster Road, Wroughton, was cordoned off as a crime scene while detectives carried out enquiries.
Forensic investigators were seen at the address for most of the afternoon and evening, and further work is expected to continue at the scene.
The suspect is being held in police custody after having been detained at the house.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said officers were currently investigating an “unexplained death” in Wroughton.
“Officers were called to an address in Lancaster Road, Wroughton, shortly after 1.45pm yesterday afternoon and discovered the body of a woman in her 50s,” the spokesperson said.
“At this stage her death is being treated as unexplained and we are awaiting the outcome of a post-mortem later today.
Meanwhile, a 76-year-old man had been arrested at the scene and was currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.
“We have to reiterate that at this stage we are not yet clear of the cause of death, a post mortem is underway to ascertain this,” police said.
“Our enquiries are at a very early stage, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.
Police said they wanted to “reassure the local community” that there was no risk to the wider public.
